Celebrating Salt Quilt by Airini Beautrais

Celebrating Salt Quilt by Airini Beautrais

by Tanya Hayton

Join us for the launch of Salt Quilt, the new poetry collection by Whanganui literary treasure Airini Beautrais.

Published by Te Herenga Waka University Press, the collection connects closely with local heritage. Airini’s work is already a beloved part of Paige's Book Gallery—if you've walked past our building, you've likely seen her poem Flow, painted by artist Catherine Macdonald on the outside of our shop. We are big fans!

This Thursday's event brings together poetry and a humble yet cleverly crafted object from the Whanganui Regional Museum collection: the Depression-era quilt made by our very own Lesley Stead’s auntie, Kathleen Lockett. This quilt inspired both the book's title and one of its central poems. During the evening, you can view this historic quilt on special display, hear the fascinating story behind it from Lesley, and enjoy live readings and a book signing with Airini.

The event starts at 5:30pm this Thursday, 9 July, at the Davis Theatre on Watt Street.

Entry is free, though koha is appreciated, and bookings are highly recommended to secure your spot. This evening is proudly presented in partnership with The Whanganui Regional Museum, Paige's Book Gallery and the Lit. Whanganui Booklovers Festival.

We can't wait to see you there!
