Celebrating Salt Quilt by Airini Beautrais

It was so good to see the Davis Theatre packed for the launch of Salt Quilt – a new poetry collection by Airini Beautrais.
We co-hosted the night with the Whanganui Regional Museum and the Lit. Whanganui Booklovers Festival, and the turnout really showed how much support there is for Airini and her work here in Whanganui.
Hearing Airini read her poetry in her own voice is always a treat. She spoke about how the historic Depression-era quilt on display became the perfect metaphor for the book—a literal patchwork of different branded salt bags stitched together, mixing everyday hardship with comfort.
Our own Lesley Stead shared the story behind that physical quilt, which was made by her auntie, Kathleen Lockett. Lesley talked about her aunt's resourcefulness and hard work, and how the quilt stands as a practical example of resilience.
